BYD published a video on YouTube of it’s U9 sports car jumping over a series of obstacles.BYD Global 🔴▶️The world of high-performance sports cars is no stranger to innovation, but BYD’s latest creation, the Yangwang U9, takes things to a whole new level—literally. This all-electric hypercar not only boasts blistering acceleration and cutting-edge aerodynamics but also features a revolutionary intelligent suspension system that allows it to jump over obstacles.
The 100-second promo video showcases the 1,287-hp (1,305 PS / 960 kW) quad-motor Yangwang U9, as it tackles a test track designed to highlight its extraordinary capabilities. The clip begins with the U9 launching from a standstill, rapidly accelerating to 120 km/h (75 mph) before leaping over a water-filled crater. The front wheels lift first, followed by the rear, sending the car airborne. While the visible gap measures 8 feet (2.5 m), on-screen text reveals that the U9 actually covered a full 20 feet (6 m) in its jump.
The challenge continues with the U9 facing a 13-foot (4 m) stretch of tire-piercing metal spikes, standing 1.4 inches (35 mm) tall—reminiscent of the spike strips seen in classic James Bond car chases. Immediately after, it encounters an identically sized section of brightly colored dust strips. The U9 clears both obstacles effortlessly, all without a driver onboard, relying entirely on its autonomous technology to navigate the course.
How Does the Yangwang U9 Jump?
The secret behind this jaw-dropping trick lies in BYD’s DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System. This suspension technology, developed entirely in-house, allows for:
- Active height adjustment – The system can raise or lower each wheel independently.
- Dynamic damping control – Adjusts shock absorber stiffness in real time.
- Force-assisted rebound – Enables the car to push off the ground with all four wheels.
Unlike traditional adaptive suspension systems, which primarily focus on comfort or handling, the DiSus-X system can make the entire car jump—not just a minor hop, but a full lift-off that clears obstacles. This is an unprecedented capability in a road-going supercar.
Why Would a Car Need to Jump?
At first glance, a jumping supercar might sound like a gimmick. However, there are practical applications for this technology:
- Avoiding road hazards – Imagine being able to lift the car over potholes, speed bumps, or even small obstacles without losing momentum.
- Enhanced handling – The suspension can react instantaneously to dips and bumps, ensuring optimal tyre contact for better grip.
- Surviving high-speed impacts – The system can brace for a collision by stiffening or adjusting the suspension to reduce damage.
Pushing the Limits of Automotive Engineering
The BYD Yangwang U9 represents China’s push into the hypercar segment, proving that it’s not just European brands leading the charge. With an advanced electric drivetrain, state-of-the-art aerodynamics, and now a game-changing suspension system, this car could redefine how we think about performance vehicles.
While it remains to be seen whether jumping cars will become a mainstream feature, one thing is certain—the Yangwang U9 is unlike anything else on the road today.
